Why a School-Managed Program is Better Than BYOD

While many schools operate under a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model, Shire Christian School has intentionally chosen to supply and manage laptops for every secondary student.

Consistency Across the Classroom

When all students use the same device, the latest Apple MacBook Air, teachers can plan lessons with confidence, knowing that every student has access to the same tools, apps, and capabilities. The powerful devices provided are perfectly suited for demanding creative software like Adobe Creative Cloud, enabling students to seamlessly work on graphic design, video editing, and other high-performance projects. BYOD environments often face challenges with compatibility and classroom efficiency due to a wide variety of devices.

Our dedicated ICT team is able to provide fast and effective support because all laptops are school-issued and managed.

Enhanced Cyber Safety and Monitoring

Every laptop is pre-configured with security settings, safe web filtering, and monitoring tools that help protect students online. Through our partnership with Qustodio, parents also have access to tools that provide insight and control over their child’s device use outside of school.

Reduced Distraction

Our managed laptops are set up to support learning, not entertainment. This allows teachers to keep students on task during class time. Combined with our long-standing policy of not allowing mobile phone use during school hours, students can stay focused, engaged, and free from unnecessary digital distractions.

Shire Christian School is proudly connected to AARNet – the advanced, high-speed network trusted by Australia’s leading universities and research organisations, including the CSIRO and ANSTO. With speeds of up to 1Gbps, our internet connection is more than 10 times faster than the typical a connection, which usually provides speeds between 25Mbps and 100Mbps for most schools. This ultra-fast, reliable connection enables innovative teaching, collaborative learning, and access to world-class digital resources.

Our program is not only about what happens in the classroom, it also provides peace of mind for families. We are mindful not to give students excessive screen time; while technology enhances learning, we continue to value traditional skills – pen and paper are still used regularly in class, especially as the HSC remains a paper-based examination.
